Smartshop, headshop, coffeeshop: what is the difference?

Smartshop, headshop, coffeeshop: the names look alike, but these are different shops with different products and different rules. A short explanation, so you know where to go for which products.

The smartshop

A smartshop sells natural psychoactive products that are legal in the Netherlands, along with related items. Think of magic truffles, microdosing products, kratom, CBD and matching accessories. The focus is on natural substances and on information about responsible use. BuddhiBloom is a smartshop.

The headshop

A headshop focuses mainly on the things around it: accessories, vaporizers, grinders, storage jars and the like. So a headshop sells more of the hardware than the substances themselves. In practice, smartshop and headshop sometimes blend into one another.

The coffeeshop

A coffeeshop is something entirely different: it is the place where cannabis, meaning weed and hash, is sold under the Dutch tolerance policy. Cannabis falls under different rules than the products of a smartshop, so it is not something you buy from us.

Where is the overlap?

The boundaries are not always razor sharp. Some shops combine a smartshop and a headshop under one roof. Legally speaking, a coffeeshop stands apart from the other two, because it deals in cannabis. Remember it this way: smartshop is natural substances, headshop is the accessories, coffeeshop is cannabis.
