Anyone comparing kratom strains for the first time quickly faces a dizzying menu: Maeng Da, Bali, Borneo, Thai, Malay, Horned, Elephant. It sounds like a wine list, and honestly it works a bit like one too: the names promise more distinction than can be proven. In this article we line up the varieties and tell you honestly what those names do and do not mean.
First, the real distinction: the colour
All kratom comes from the same tree, the Mitragyna speciosa. The most meaningful distinction is not the region name but the colour: red, green or white. It refers to the vein colour of the leaf and above all to the processing after harvest, such as drying and fermenting. Users describe red as the most relaxed variety, white as the most uplifting and green as the balance between them. See red, white or green kratom: how to choose.
Then the region names: Bali, Borneo, Thai and friends
The second layer of names refers to regions of origin in Southeast Asia. That sounds precise, but rarely is: the vast majority of all kratom nowadays simply comes from Indonesia, whatever the label says. A "Bali" is often not kratom from Bali, but a trade name that stuck.
Maeng Da: the most famous name
Maeng Da is not a region but a quality label from Thailand, born when farmers selected sturdy trees with alkaloid-rich leaf. It has become the most famous name on the shelf, and yes, also a bit of a marketing term. Why we still chose it is explained in what does Maeng Da kratom mean?.
Why we only sell one strain
Our kratom range is deliberately small: Red Maeng Da, Green Maeng Da and White Maeng Da, all three from the same trusted grower. Rather three colours we truly know than twenty names whose origin we cannot verify. It saves you choice stress and saves us explaining why "Green Elephant Jungle Supreme" grew on the very same tree.
Which one do you choose?
The honest summary: choose by colour, not by region name. If you are new to all of this, kratom effects: what users report is a fine place to start, whatever the packaging says.
