Learning to use kratom safely: a guide to responsible use

Many articles about kratom hand you a table of grams and call it a day. We deliberately avoid that. Kratom is not a product where 'the right number' determines safety: how you use it matters far more than a precise amount. In this guide we share the principles of responsible use, not to scare you, but because a well informed user is their own best protection. Not familiar with the basics yet? Then start with what is kratom.

Start low, and really mean it

The most important principle with kratom is also the simplest: start with a small amount and wait for the effect before you even consider taking more. With kratom the window between a stimulating and a sedating dose is narrow, and your personal sensitivity is something you cannot know in advance. Those who start low get to discover calmly how their body responds; those who go high right away risk nausea, dizziness and an unpleasant experience. More is not better here. It is just more.

Give your body time as well. The effect usually sets in within ten to thirty minutes, so wait at least an hour before drawing conclusions. The classic mistake is thinking 'I don't feel anything' and topping up, just before the first dose kicks in after all.

The biggest pitfall: daily use

If there is one thing we want to emphasise, it is this: the way you use kratom over time shapes the risk of dependence more than any single dose does. Because the active compounds act on the opioid receptors, with regular, daily use your body can grow accustomed to it, and stopping can bring on withdrawal symptoms.

The protection against that is behaviour, not dosage. Many people keep kratom to occasional use rather than a daily routine, and deliberately build in kratom free days. And be honest with yourself if you notice you are starting to feel you 'need' it to get through your day. That is exactly the moment to pause and take stock. Many people who run into trouble with kratom slid into it gradually, through daily use that crept up unnoticed, not through one large dose.

What never to combine it with

Never combine kratom with alcohol, opioids, sedatives or other drugs. Because kratom itself acts on the opioid receptors and on the nervous system, combining it with other depressant substances can amplify effects in dangerous ways. If you take medication, certainly antidepressants or other substances that act on your nervous system, talk to your doctor first before trying kratom. When in doubt: don't.

Mind the quality of your source

Kratom is a natural product that is barely regulated, and that has a flip side: quality and purity vary widely from one supplier to the next. Poorly stored or contaminated kratom can contain substances you would rather not have in there. So many people buy only from a source that is transparent about origin and quality, and that they trust. This is one of the reasons we at BuddhiBloom are selective about what we offer: with a product that depends so heavily on purity, your supplier is a safety factor, not a detail.

Who kratom is not suitable for

Honest information also means being clear about when it is better left alone. Do not use kratom if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, if you take psychiatric or other medication (talk to your doctor first), or if you are under 18. If you have a personal history of addiction or dependence, extra caution is wise: precisely because of the way kratom works, care matters all the more.

Which type, and how to go on

If you have decided you want to try kratom carefully, the next question is which colour suits you: users describe red as the most relaxed variety, white as the most energising and green as the balance between the two. We explain that choice in our article on the differences between red, green and white kratom.
