The concepts of "set" and "setting" are essential for anyone working with psychedelics. They were popularised by Timothy Leary in the 1960s and are still the best guide for a good experience.
What is "set"?
Set is your mindset: your mental and emotional state at the moment you take something. Are you relaxed and open? Then the chances of a pleasant experience are good. Are you anxious, stressed or sad? Then waiting for another time is the sensible choice.
What is "setting"?
Setting is your environment: the physical space, the people around you and the atmosphere. Choose a safe, comfortable spot. Home is almost always better than a festival or an unfamiliar location, certainly for your first time.
Practical tips
- Plan for the day beforehand: no obligations, put your phone on silent
- Have some good music ready, music has a big influence on your mood
- Make sure you have water, fruit and a comfortable place to lie down
- Have a sober, trusted person nearby (tripsitting)
- Set an intention: what do you want to get out of this experience?
After the experience
Integration is just as important as the preparation. Take the following day easy. Write down what you experienced. Talk about it with someone you trust. The insights from a psychedelic experience sometimes only fully land later on.
When not to?
A good set and setting lower the risk, but they do not cancel out contraindications. Do not use truffles with a personal or family history of psychosis or bipolar disorder, while using SSRIs, lithium or other psychiatric medication, during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or if you are under 18.
