On an empty stomach, as tea, or just chewing well? How you take magic truffles makes a difference to how quickly and how pleasantly things begin. A practical rundown of the methods, without a recipe for the most intense trip possible.
Why the method matters
Truffles only take effect once the active compound is absorbed by your body. How and when you take them influences how quickly that happens and how your stomach responds. It does not change how strong the variety is, but it does make the beginning gentler or, conversely, faster.
On an empty stomach
The most common approach is taking them on an empty stomach, for example a few hours after your last meal. The active compound is then absorbed more quickly and the effects come on sooner. A full stomach slows it down and can flatten it out a little.
Chewing well
Chew the truffles well and thoroughly. By chewing them finely you make it easier for your body to absorb the compound. They do not taste great and it takes some perseverance, quite literally, but it helps.
As tea
Brewing truffles as tea is a gentler option for your stomach, and some people find the beginning goes a bit more smoothly this way. Cut the truffles small, pour hot but not boiling water over them, let them steep for a while, and drink the whole thing, optionally including the pieces. Hard boiling is not recommended.
Dealing with the taste and nausea
Truffles do not taste particularly nice, and some people feel a little nauseous as things come on. A piece of ginger or some ginger tea beforehand can ease nausea. Eat lightly in the hours before, so your stomach feels calmer.
Start gently
Whichever method you choose, the most important thing stays the same: start low and build up slowly. How to gauge amounts is covered in dosing truffles without a scale, and how to prepare in your first time with truffles.
