What is CBD oil? An honest introduction

CBD has popped up everywhere in recent years, from the drugstore to the webshop, and with it plenty of half-told stories. Time for a level-headed explanation: what CBD oil actually is, how it compares to THC, and what you can and cannot expect from it. We make no health promises, this is information.

What is CBD?

CBD, in full cannabidiol, is one of the many natural compounds (cannabinoids) in the hemp plant (Cannabis sativa). CBD oil is made by extracting CBD from the plant and diluting it in a carrier oil, often hemp seed or olive oil. Unlike the better-known THC, CBD is not psychoactive in the way that produces a high.

CBD and THC: what is the difference?

THC and CBD come from the same plant, but they work differently. THC is the compound that causes the familiar high. CBD does not do that, it does not put you in a haze. That is why you can use CBD without getting high. CBD oil sold in the Netherlands contains only a minimal amount of THC, below the legal limit.

Is CBD oil legal in the Netherlands?

Yes, CBD oil with less than 0.2% THC is legally available in the Netherlands. Our oil is made from hemp and stays below that limit. If you want to know what to look for when choosing, read Buying CBD oil: how to choose a good one, or browse the CBD range.

What CBD oil is made from

Good CBD oil starts with good hemp, preferably organically grown. The CBD is extracted from the plant and diluted to a certain percentage. That percentage says something about the concentration of CBD in the bottle, not about a promise. Whether an oil is full-spectrum or an isolate is explained in full-spectrum, broad-spectrum or isolate.

What we deliberately do not promise

We are honest about this: we cannot and will not make health claims about CBD. So you will not read here that it helps with anything or cures anything. Many people use CBD, each for their own reasons, and on many points the science has not yet crystallized. Information on our site is educational, not medical advice.

Who has reason to be careful?

Are you taking medication, pregnant or breastfeeding? Then talk to your doctor first before using CBD. We sell CBD only to adults aged 18 and over.
