How long do magic truffles last? The timeline from start to finish

It is one of the most practical questions you can ask before your first time, and at the same time one of the most important: how long am I on this journey? Unlike a cup of coffee or a glass of wine, you cannot "switch off" a truffle experience halfway through. Knowing the timeline means you plan better, and planning is half the work of a good experience.

The short version

On an empty or light stomach, fresh truffles usually start working within 30 to 60 minutes. The experience then builds toward a peak that roughly falls between the first and third hour, after which the effects gradually ease off. Count on 4 to 6 hours of noticeable effects in total, followed by a tail of several hours in which you may feel different from usual, often calm and reflective. So simply keep a whole day free for it.

The timeline in phases

  • Step 1, 0 to about 45 minutes: the run-up. After taking them, at first nothing seems to happen. This is the phase where beginners make the classic mistake: thinking it is not working and taking more. Don't. The second dose then arrives exactly when the first one finally kicks in. Always wait at least an hour and a half before drawing any conclusions.
  • About 45 minutes to 1.5 hours: the come-up. The first signals: colours look more vivid, your body feels different, thoughts begin to wander. Some people feel mild nausea or restlessness in this phase; that is normal and almost always fades once the experience settles in.
  • About 1.5 to 3 hours: the peak. The most intense part of the experience. How this feels depends heavily on your dose (see our dosing guide): from a dreamy, heightened perception at lower doses to a full psychedelic experience at higher ones.
  • About 3 to 6 hours: the landing. The effects ease off in waves. You gradually come back, often with a sense of calm or gentleness. This is a pleasant moment for music, sitting outside or a good conversation.
  • The rest of the day: the tail. Officially worn off, but many people still feel light, tired or, on the contrary, remarkably clear for hours. Plan nothing that evening that demands sharpness, and driving is of course not an option, not for the whole day.

What influences the duration

The biggest factor is the dose: more truffles usually means not only a more intense but also a longer experience. Your stomach plays a leading role too: on a full stomach truffles come up more slowly and less predictably, on an empty stomach faster and more predictably. Beyond that, it simply varies from person to person: metabolism, sensitivity and even your mood that day all count. So the times above are averages, not guarantees; your first time is also your first measurement.

When it feels longer than it lasts

An honest heads-up: during the peak your sense of time can distort considerably. Ten minutes can feel like an hour, and someone having a hard time may think it "will never stop". It does. Always. It helps enormously to know this beforehand, and to have the basics in order: a familiar setting, no obligations, and preferably a sober person nearby. Why those conditions carry so much weight is something you can read in our article on set and setting.

Plan generously, not tightly

The practical summary: take truffles early in the day, on an empty or light stomach, on a day without any obligations, and keep the evening free as well. Not because it always lasts six hours, but because an experience you feel no rush to get through is simply a better experience. Unsure about your dose or planning?
