Magic mushrooms are illegal in the Netherlands, magic truffles are legal

The Netherlands has an international reputation for allowing everything, and then comes the surprise: magic mushrooms, the psilocybin mushrooms themselves, have been banned here since 2008. What is legal: magic truffles. Same fungus, same active compound, different form, different law. A small miracle of legal botany.

What happened in 2008

After years of tolerance, the Netherlands banned hallucinogenic mushrooms. But the law lists mushrooms, fruiting bodies that is, and a truffle is not a fruiting body. It is a sclerotium, an underground storage nodule of the same fungus. It fell outside the list and remained legal.

Same compound, same kind of journey

Truffles contain the same psilocybin as the mushroom. The experience users describe is essentially the same: from gentle stillness to a deep inner journey, depending on variety and dose. How the two compare is covered in magic truffles vs mushrooms: the strength story.
