Magic truffles versus mushrooms, the strength story

A persistent story online: truffles are supposedly a kind of mushroom-light. That is only half true, and the half that is not can surprise you. Time for an honest strength story, without making the numbers prettier or scarier than they are.

Same compound, different packaging

Truffles and mushrooms come from related fungi and both contain psilocybin. The truffle is the underground nodule (sclerotium), the mushroom the above-ground fruiting body. Why one is legal and the other is not, you can read in magic mushrooms are illegal, truffles are not.

Where "weaker" comes from

Fresh truffles contain a lot of water, and per gram of fresh weight there is less psilocybin than in dried mushrooms. So if you compare fresh with dried, the truffle looks weaker, but that is an apples-and-oranges story. Gram for gram, and with the right variety, a truffle journey can go just as deep.

Why the variety matters more than the label

Within truffles alone there is an enormous range. The mild Tampanensis and the intense High Hawaiians play in completely different categories. Which variety suits which experience is in which magic truffles suit you.

What this means for your dose

Because both fresh weight and variety matter, "how many grams" alone says little. A precision scale turns a guess into a gram.
