Choosing magic truffles is mainly about two things: how strong a variety is, and how much experience you have. A stronger truffle is not better, it is simply stronger. What suits you depends on where you stand and what you are looking for. Below we go through the varieties, from mild to powerful, without any fluff.
One thing up front: if this is your first time, many people choose a mild variety and build up calmly. There is no rush, and you can always take a further step next time. The other way around does not work.
Mild: a gentle first introduction
For a first time, the milder varieties are the most sensible choice. The Tampanensis is known as the mildest option and gives you room to get used to the sensations at your own pace. The Mexicana is the classic pick for beginners: gentle, clear and easy to dose. With these varieties you can get acquainted without being overwhelmed.
Medium: for those who already have experience
If you have used truffles before and know how you react, the Atlantis is a popular next step. A bit sturdier than the mild varieties, but still manageable if you prepare and keep an eye on your dose.
Powerful: for experienced users only
The Dragon's Dynamite, Sugashrooms and High Hawaiians are powerful varieties, meant for people with experience. Here set and setting really matter: take your time, choose a safe place and preferably arrange a sober sitter. If you are just starting out, this is one to skip. A strong variety is not a goal in itself.
Our honest advice
Start low, build up slowly, and stop if in doubt. The right variety is not the strongest one, but the one that fits your experience and your peace of mind. If you want to prepare well, read your first time with truffles and set and setting. If you are unsure whether this is the right moment, read when it is better not to buy magic truffles. And if you are not certain, feel free to email us and we will think it through honestly with you.
If, alongside the variety, you would also like an indication of the number of grams, use our dosage helper: three short questions about your weight, experience and what you are looking for, and you get a deliberately conservative gram indication along with varieties that fit.
