A tripsitter is someone who stays sober with you while you have a psychedelic experience. Sounds simple, and it is, but a good sitter makes the difference between feeling safe and feeling alone. What does someone like that do, and when do you need one?
What is a tripsitter?
A tripsitter takes nothing themselves, stays clear-headed, and is simply there. Not to steer the experience or have opinions about it, but to be a calm, safe presence. A kind of anchor: when things get intense, you know someone is there who keeps an overview.
What does a good sitter do?
- Stays sober and calm, the whole way through.
- Is quietly present without imposing. Silence is fine.
- Does not steer and does not judge what you experience.
- Reassures you when things get intense: this is from the truffles, and it will pass.
- Handles the practical things: water, a blanket, softer music, the door.
- Steps in when it is really needed, and in an emergency calls 112.
When do you need a sitter?
Not always, but it is sensible for your first time and at a higher dose. The less experience you have or the stronger the variety, the more valuable a sober presence becomes. Unsure about the strength? Have a look at which magic truffles suit you. For a first time a sitter is almost always a good idea, see also your first time with truffles.
How do you choose a sitter?
Choose someone you trust, someone you feel at ease with, and who stays calm if things go a little differently than planned. They do not have to be an expert, just someone who can listen and does not panic easily. Agree beforehand on roughly how long it will last and what you would find helpful when things get intense.
Are you the sitter?
Then read up on set and setting and on difficult moments, so you know what to expect and how to reassure. You do not have to fix anything, you only have to be there. Read set and setting and preventing and handling a bad trip.
